Trail Preservation Mission and Purpose:
The WSER Trustees are working diligently to assure that the WS Trail remains open for future use. Trail work is being conducted in association with the Western States Trail Foundation (WSTF), the Inez and Wendell Robie Foundation, the Drucilla Barner Foundation, California State Parks and Recreation, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) - Tahoe National Forest and the Placer County Water Agency (PCWA).

Total focus is on trail preservation, either by improvement or maintenance, and is meant to provide a safe route for the Western States Endurance Run and the Tevis Cup Ride, as well as the enjoyment of the growing population of community members who spend time in the outdoors. This is accomplished by joint coordination between the different foundations and government agencies.

Importance of Trail Volunteers:
The USFS and California State Parks and Recreation do not have general trail maintenance programs for the Western States and peripheral trails. Trail work is done principally by volunteers. Also the funding for these projects generally comes from private organizations, such as the WSER, WSTF and associated foundations. Volunteering on the trail is rewarding and fun. This is a terrific way to satisfy your service requirement hours!

Core Trail Team
The core trail team is composed of members of the WSER Trustees and the WSTF Board of Directors, plus local trail supporters. This team currently includes: Dave Van Wicklin, Donn Zea, Tim Twietmeyer, Chuck and Jim Mather, Ric Valentine, Bill Johnson and Matt Lambert.

Upcoming Trail Projects -- 2012 Series

For those WS runners local to Auburn, CA, these trail projects are an ideal way to meet your 8-hour Service Requirement. For those outside the Northern California area, you may volunteer your time with your local organized ultra marathon or run, either in the presentation of their event or in maintaining the trails that they use.

For the following work projects, all scheduled dates are normally Saturdays. Dates and work locations are subject to change due to weather/snow pack.

Runner Service Requirement hours for the 2012 WS Run will be credited through the May 12th work day. May through June work day hours can be used for the 2013 run. Volunteers who arrive on time and work through the completion of the work day (typically, we conclude by 1:30PM) are credited with a full 8 hours. Please print a copy of the WS Service Requirement Form and bring it with you to the event.

For trailwork done on Forest Service land (Events #3 through #7, below) USFS requires that you fill out, sign and send their Volunteer Liability Release Form to the agency office before you participate. Note: This is a USFS form, not the WS service requirement form.
